Battle.net hack: how to keep yourself safe

Battle.net hack: how to keep yourself safe

Earlier today we received word that Blizzard's battle.net servers have been hacked, and with a recent influx of 10 million users thanks to Diablo III's launch, that makes this potentially devastating for a lot of people. Blizzard has since released an FAQ on battle.net, telling users what exactly was compromised and what remains secure. Those with a North American account (which includes people in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia) were hit the hardest, so if that's you, read on to find out what you can do to keep your account safe.

Blizzard’s ‘Heroes of the Dorm’ tournament will be covered by ESPN

Blizzard Entertainment has announced its new "Heroes of the Dorm" tournament for, you guessed it, college students. These students will be battling for a litany of prizes, the best ones probably being the funds for tuition (in excess of $450,000 is up for grabs). While it's a fun shot for college students to get a leg up in their college (and perhaps gaming) career, it's a big milestone for eSports in general: for the first time ever, ESPN will be offering live televised coverage of an eSports event.

World of Warcraft tokens bring 30 days of gameplay

World of Warcraft's creator has announced a new in-game item that'll give gamers 30 days of gameplay for redeeming it (or gold, depending on circumstance). They're called Tokens, and they can be bought with real-life money in the shop, then swapped to get in-game gold. Some other gamers, nearing the end of their subscription and in need of getting a gaming fix for one more money, will be able to buy that token, then, and redeem it for a month's worth of playing.

World-bending changes: Warcraft III models in Starcraft II

If you are a fan of both of Blizzard's *Craft games, then soon you will get your chance to bring them all together into one messy whole. The game publisher has just announced that it is bringing thousands of Warcraft III assets into the StarCraft II world, first via the Public Test Realm (PTR) channel. This will give testers some time to dream up wars and scenarios, and maybe even reenactments, which Blizzard may spotlight once the patches roll out to the wider public.

Diablo 3 gold and real-money auction houses end-date: tomorrow

Diablo 3 gold and real-money auction houses end-date: tomorrow

It’s time to be done with the longest-lasting experiment in real-cash trade for Diablo items in the history of the Diablo gamin franchise. It will be Tuesday, March 18th when the gold and real-money auction houses are taken down entirely, while the rest of the auction house ecosystem will remain in play. Until June 24th, players will be able to access their "completed" tabs - but we wouldn’t risk it.

Diablo III Auction Houses shuttering doors entirely

Diablo III Auction Houses shuttering doors entirely

This week the folks behind Diablo III's development and upkeep have announced that they'll be cutting their ill-fated auction house from the equation entirely. As Blizzard suggests, both the Gold and the Real Money auction houses will be cut from the game from top to bottom in the month of March, 2014, after a rather rocky road from the launch of the point we're at now where it's been decided that this mechanic eats away at the core of the game. This move will be pushed alongside the "Loot 2.0" system appearing with the Reaper of Souls expansion of the game.
